WPD’s Planning Application

Llanishen Water, a subsidiary of Western Power Distribution, which is itself a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Power & Light Corporation, has finally submitted an application to build a housing estate on the site of Llanishen Reservoir. It was submitted to the Planning Department of Cardiff County Council on Tuesday 17th December, although the official consultation period is not due to start until 6th January. As soon as the full documentation is available, our planners and environmentalists will study it in detail and we will report back to members at a public meeting on 28th January (see below). The consultation period will last for at least six weeks and will possibly be longer.

Public Meeting

RAG has organised a public meeting to discuss Western Power’s planning application on Tuesday 28th January at 7 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 1 of the University of Wales College of Medicine at the Heath Hospital. A map showing the location of the lecture theatre and convenient nearby parking is shown overleaf. The meeting is open to anyone who cares about our local environment in North Cardiff and who would like to assist in the campaign to prevent the destruction of Llanishen reservoir and its wildlife for the sake of yet another housing estate.

It is essential that we get a good turn out for this meeting, and we have booked a venue that will accommodate a large number of people. At this meeting we will unveil the next step in our strategy to defeat this awful planning application which will lead to over 340 housing units, 1000 people, and about 500 cars being introduced to this wonderful beauty spot which has high recreational and conservation value.

The North East Cardiff Green Wedge – RAG’s Alternative

The document accompanying this newsletter provides details of RAG’s alternative to the Western Power development. As you will see this proposes that the reservoirs should remain as a public amenity and form the core part of a green wedge stretching from Roath Park in the south to the open countryside north of the M4 by Lisvane.
If you agree that the RAG scheme is a better alternative for the communities of North East Cardiff, it is essential that you let the planning authorities know. Please write giving strong support to our proposals, stressing that the reservoirs should remain as a public amenity at the core of the green wedge. Please write to:

Mr. Julian Stedman, Strategic Planning Manager, County Hall, Cardiff, CF10 4UW

At this stage, please restrict your comments to our proposals for the green wedge. We will initiate a separate campaign against the Western Power housing scheme later in January.
